VIO CHOE Korean, b. 1971

Vio Choe is an artist who expresses the connectivity transcending time and space through lines drawn in an unconscious state. He has developed his unique artistic language and universe based on his personal experience as an art director and a game designer in New York.

Choe tries to work in unexpected realms of unconsciousness and instinct and not to distort the energy by the artist’s intention and technique. This is why he squeezes paint tubes instead of using brushes to draw the lines. He has evolved further his own creative philosophy on the basis of scientific theories such as Einstein’s theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. The artist depicts the relationship between humans and creation tightly and meticulously by focusing on the interaction of the energy. 

Vio Choe has been solidifying his position on the international stage by receiving invitations from major art shows such as Art Karlsruhe (2022), SCOPE Miami Beach (2021), and CONTEXT Art Miami (2019). Moreover, at the invitation of Kunstverein Heppenheim, Vio Choe was the first Korean artist who held a solo exhibition at the venue. The artist was also showcased at Palazzo Bembo on the occasion of the 58th Venice Biennale.

His works are in the collections of museums and institutions, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, SK Happiness Foundation, WOORAN FOUNDATION, and Seoul National University Boremae Medical Center, among others. 

한국의 중견 미술가 최비오는 무의식의 상태로 그린 선을 통해 시공간을 초월하는 연결성을 표현하는 작가이다. 뉴욕에서 수년간 예술감독, 게임 디자이너로 활동하며 얻은 경험을 바탕으로 작가만의 조형 언어와 세계관을 발전시켰다.

그는 계획되지 않은 무의식과 본능의 영역에서 작업하고자 하며, 화가의 의도와 테크닉에 의해 에너지가 왜곡되지 않도록 노력한다. 붓이 아닌 튜브로 물감을 짜서 선을 표현하는 것도 그 이유이다.

그는 아인슈타인의 상대성 이론, 현대물리학의 양자역학 등 과학적 탐구의 결과를 토대로 자신만의 예술철학을 발전시켰다. 인간과 만물이 이루어진 원리와 관계, 그리고 에너지의 상호작용에 집중하여 이를 상세하고 밀도 있는 표현력으로 나타낸다.  

최비오는 독일 아트 카를스루에 (2022), 스콥 마이애미 비치(2021), 컨텍스트 아트 마이애미(2019) 등 전세계 주요 아트쇼에서 초대전을 가지며 자신의 역량을 널리 알리며 국제적 입지를 다지고 있다. 특히 2017년 독일 헤펜하임 미술협회의 초청으로 아시아인 최초로 개인전을 개최한 바 있으며, 2019년에는 베니스비엔날레  팔라조뱀보 전시장에서 초대전을 가졌다. 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관, SK 행복나눔재단, 우란문화재단, 서울대학교 보라매병원 등에서 영구 소장하고 있다.
