YISU KIM Korean, b. 1974

Kim was born in Seoul in 1974, graduated from Sungshin Women's University, and majored in Western painting at the Pratt Institute in New York. Since adolescence, She has been interested in the expression of ‘things that are invisible’ even though they exist in this world. On a spring day when she was in high school, she wanted to paint the scent of acacia that permeates into the classroom through the window. In 2004, when she was thinking about how to draw a vision of the world that is invisible like fragrance, She came across Agnes Martin’s work and sympathized greatly with it. The fact that abstract painting, which she understood only as a tautology of form and an absence of content, can serve as a venue for the artist to express his or her own message, and the belief in it, became the compass of my painting. She give shape to the various layers of existence and time, and the in-between world, using inframince, the aesthetics of subtle differences, as the basis of my formative work. Exhibitions include "Mubi(無比), Square in Site-specific" (The Page Gallery, Seoul), "Cutting off" (Total Museum of Art, Seoul), "Minimal Variation" (Seoul National University Museum of Art, Seoul), "The post-Dansaekhwa of Korea" (Leeahn Gallery, Seoul), "Mass & Boundaries" (Space K, Daegu), "Neo-Moroism" (Tokyo Gallery, Beijing), and "Inframince-Landscape" Hendrick Hamel museum, Gorinchem). 

작가는 1974년 서울에서 태어나 성신여대를 졸업하고 뉴욕의 프랫대학에서 서양화를 전공했다. 사춘기부터 이 세상에 존재하지만 ‘보이지 않은 것’의 표현에 관심이 많았던 작가는 여고 시절의 봄날, 교실 창으로 스며드는 아카시아 향기를 그리고 싶었다. 향기처럼 보이지 않는 이 세상의 전망을 어떻게 그릴까. 그러던 중 2004년 아그네스 마틴의 작품을 만났고, 그 세계에 크게 공감했다. 형식의 동어반복, 내용의 부재라고만 이해했던 추상회화가 마틴처럼 주체의 독자적 메시지를 펼치는 장이 될 수 있다는 사실, 이런 신념이 그녀의 회화 세계의 나침반이 되었다. 그녀는 미묘한 차이의 미학, 앵프라맹스 (inframince)를 조형의 근간으로 삼아 존재와 시간의 다양한 층위, 그 사이(in-between)의 세계를 표현하고 있다. 기획전으로는 무비(無比), Square in Site-specific(더페이지갤러리). 접촉 경계 혼란 (토탈미술관), 미니멀 변주(서울대미술관), The post Dansaekhwa of Korea (리안갤러리), 덩어리와 경계 (스페이스K), Neo-Moroism (도쿄갤러리), Inframince-Landscape (하멜뮤지움) 등이 있다.
