Petrit Halilaj Kosovo, b. 1986

코소보를 대표하는 작가 페트릿 할릴라이(b.1986)는 2010년 베를린 비엔날레에 참가하며 국제무대에 데뷔하였다. 2013년 베니스 비엔날레에서 코소보 대표 작가로 선정되었고, 이어서 2017년 제57회 베니스 비엔날레에서 마리오 메르츠 상과 심사위원 특별언급상을 수상했다. 이후 테이트 세인트아이브스와 뉴욕 뉴뮤지엄 등 다수의 개인전을 열었다.

페트릿 할릴라이의 작품 세계는 코소보에서 보낸 유년시절을 배경으로 한다. 1997년 발발한 코소보 전쟁으로 작가의 가족은 모두 알바니아의 난민캠프로 보내졌다. 페트릿은 난민캠프에서 아이들의 심리적 트라우마를 치유하고자 마련한 심리프로그램을 통해 그림을 그리게 된다. 당시 난민캠프에 방문한 코피아난 UN사무총장에게 작가는 아이의 시선에서 전쟁의 현실을 표현한 그림으로 평화의 메시지를 전하였고, 그 장면이 TV에 널리 알려지게 되었다. 난민캠프에서의 경험과 인연들로 페트릿 할릴라이는 밀라노 브레라 미술 아카데미에 진학하게 된다.

작가는 코소보-베를린-이탈리아를 오가며 스펙터클한 컷피스 작업, 장소특정적 설치, 퍼포먼스 등 다채로운 장르의 작업활동을 펼친다. 페트릿 할릴라이의 예술은 언제나 상상력을 펼치고 꿈을 꾸고 이야기를 전달하는 삶을 구원하는 창구이다. 

Petrit Halilaj (b. 1986), a prominent artist representing Kosovo, made his international debut by participating in the 2010 Berlin Biennale. In 2013, he was selected as the representative artist for Kosovo at the Venice Biennale, and in 2017, he received the Mario Merz Prize and a Special Mention Award at the 57th Venice Biennale. Following this, he held numerous solo exhibitions, including at Tate St. Ives and New Museum in New York.

Petrit Halilaj's work is deeply rooted in his childhood experiences in Kosovo. When the Kosovo War broke out in 1997, his family was sent to a refugee camp in Albania. It was in this refugee camp that Petrit began drawing through a psychological program aimed at healing the trauma of children. During this time, he conveyed a message of peace to Kofi A.Annan, the then UN Secretary-General, through his artwork that depicted the reality of war from a child's perspective—this moment gained widespread attention on television. His experiences and connections from the refugee camp led him to pursue studies at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan.

The artist engages in diverse creative activities, including spectacular cut-piece works, site-specific installations, and performances, traveling between Kosovo, Berlin, and Italy. Petrit Halilaj's art is always a gateway to imagination, dreams, and storytelling, serving as a form of salvation in life.
