Jeewi Lee Korea, b. 1987

Jeewi Lee (Seoul, Korea, 1987) has developed a multidisciplinary practice centered on the notion of “trace,” exploring the material and temporal residues of everyday life, forgotten cultural heritage, and site-specific histories through installation, video, and painting. Her new installation in this exhibition is inspired by the botanical nature of the lacquer tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum). In its liquid state, lacquer is highly toxic and can cause severe allergic reactions, yet through drying and curing, it transforms into one of the most durable protective materials. Lee sees the tree resin as powerful, protective tears shed by the tree itself. She dresses the tree—marked with patterned incisions and traces left by the harvesting of lacquer—with her own tears. The blue light emphasizes the magical and captivating power of this tree. Developed in collaboration with a Korean lacquer master, the installation expands into a spatial meditation on material transformation and cyclical temporality.

지븨 리(서울, 한국, 1987)는 ‘흔적’이라는 키워드로, 일상의 소재, 잊혀진 문화유산, 시간과 공간의 흔적을 주제로 장소 특정적 설치, 영상, 회화 등 다양한 매체를 넘나드는 작업을 전개해 왔다. 이번 전시에 소개되는 신작들은 옻나무(Toxicodendron vernicifluum)의 특성에 영감을 받았다. 액체 상태의 옻은 강한 독성을 지녀 피부에 심각한 알레르기 반응을 일으킬 수 있지만, 건조와 경화의 과정을 거치면 오히려 물건을 보호하고 감싸는 가장 내구성 있는 재료로 변모한다. 작가는 옻나무에서 흘러나오는 수액을 나무가 흘리는 보호의 눈물로 바라본다. 옻을 채취하며 새겨진 절개의 흔적들 위로, 작가는 자신의 눈물을 입히듯 나무를 감싸며 치유의 몸짓을 더한다. 푸른빛 아래 드러나는 나무들은 주술적이고 내면적인 힘을 발산한다. 한국의 옻칠 장인과 협업하여 완성된 본 설치 작업은 예술적 실험과 개입을 통해 시간과 물질의 순환과 전이를 공간적으로 드러낸다.
