DAMIEN HIRST

 

The Page Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Damien Hirst, a British contemporary artist who has had a steady and profound impact on the art world over his 30-year career. Through a showcase of Damien Hirst's major works from the 1990s to 2000s, including Medicine Cabinet, Spot Painting, Butterfly Colour Painting, and Remedy Painting, the exhibition sheds light on the artist's work, which explores the finite nature of life, death, and the problem of existence in an original visual language.

 

Based on his interest in modern science, Damien Hirst has produced a series of works that aggressively utilize scientific and medical subject matter. In particular, his literal reproduction of a medicine cabinet, which includes actual medicine on the canvas, criticizes the problem of blind faith in medicine and ignorance of its side effects. His work which features butterflies that look as if they are alive attached to the canvas intuitively conveys the ambiguous boundary between life and death.

 

On the other hand, the artist, who has delved deeply into color and the problem of ‘seeing,’ to the extent of calling himself a ‘colorist,’ creates spectacles of rich color using diverse materials. When viewed up close, medicine cabinets, pills, and butterflies are concrete and problematic objects that contain their own information and logic, but when viewed from a distance, are just abstract elements that enchant the viewer with their dazzling beauty.
