KwangYup Cheon explores the essence of paintings under physical conditions such as planes, paints, and supports, using the most basic elements of "circle." The wave and variations of the circles, which is the main theme of the work, are presented by attaching punched circles or the punched frame onto the canvas and painting other circles on top of them. By sandpapering the finely convex circles or creating colorful optical illusions, he constructs a "stratum of painting" with numerous layers.

Cheon tries to express "omni," which means "every" and "all" with the simplest circles, everything that is simple but not simple, paradoxically revealing the intention of expressing "nothing."

Displayed along with the paintings are objects implying the artist's working process. The pigment powder peeled off during the sandpapering was slowly sunk and accumulated in water, making it look like a geological structure. The uniqueness of paintings, that is, the planarity, is ironically presented in three-dimensions. Existing as visual deposits from time and space, they decode the artist's painting alchemy.

천광엽은 평면, 물감, 지지체 같은 물리적 조건에서 작품의 본질을 탐구하며 ‘원’이라는 가장 기초적인 조형 요소를 이용하여 독창적인 작업을 펼친다. 작품의 주요 테마인 `원’의 파동과 변주는 컴퓨터 프로그래밍으로 일정하게 타공한 원을 캔버스에 붙이거나 타공한 틀을 캔버스에 덮어 또 다른 원 형상을 칠하는 방법으로 표현된다. 미세하게 볼록 튀어 올라 있는 원의 속살을 드러내거나 원의 채색으로 기묘한 착시 효과를 만들어 내는 등 수많은 겹(Layer)으로 `회화적 지층’을 만들어 내는 것이 특징이다.

가장 단순하면서 기본적인 원을 통해 모든(Every), 전체(All)를 의미하는 ‘옴니(Omni)’를 표현하는 천광엽의 작품은 단순하지만 단순하지 않은 모든 것을 포함하는, 그래서 역설적으로 아무것도 표현하지 않은 작가의 의도를 품고 있다.

함께 전시된 오브제 작품은 작가의 회화 작업 과정과 결과를 함축한다. 평면 제작 과정에서 벗겨낸 안료 가루를 물 속에서 서서히 가라앉고 쌓이게 하여 지질학적 구조처럼 보이게 한 것으로, 회화의 ‘매체 고유성’, 즉 평면으로의 지향을 역설적으로 입체로 표현한 작업이다. 평면 작품들 사이에 배치된 오브제들은 시공간의 퇴적물로서 존재감을 공고히 하며 작가의 회화 연금술을 내밀하게 드러내고 있다.
