Jung Myung Taek

Myung Taek Jung is a pioneering figure in Korea, bringing in the concept of art furniture that flourished since the 1950s in the U.S. In the times of contemporary art demanding uniqueness, Jung previses an attitude obsessing with superficiality. Instead, he connects cultures and between tradition and contemporaneity. In the past, when Korean design materials were quite limited to wood and woodworking, he wanted more and devoted himself to finding new possibilities that materials held within. In the U.S., as the designer and producer at Wendell Castle Collection, he produced the collection’s benches and tables. He seeks design that satisfies not only practicality and bodily senses but, moreover, one’s sensibility; his idea is based on the naturalistic aesthetics in Korean tradition that finds the right balance between humbleness and extravagance.

1950년대 미국에서 형성된 아트 퍼니처의 개념을 한국 대중에게 각인시킨 정명택(b. 1971) 작가의 개인전이다. 그의 작업은 문화와 문화를 연결하고 전통과 새로움을 조합한다. 한국의 가구 디자인은 과거에 목공예, 목가구 중심으로 재료를 제한적으로 사용하였으나 정명택은 물질에 숨어 있는 새로운 가능성을 탐구하는데 주력했다. 미국에서 작업 당시 정명택은 아트 퍼니처의 아버지라 불리는 웬델 캐슬의 컬렉션 디자이너 및 제작자로 벤치와 테이블 작품을 제작하였다. 정명택 작가의 작품은 누추하지도 사치스럽지도 않은 한국의 정도(正道)를 담고 있다. 이 자연주의 미의식은 실용성과 신체적 감각을 넘어 교감하는 이의 정서를 충족시킨다.
