Suejin Chung

The Page Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Suejin Chung(b.1969, Seoul) from August 22 to September 21, 2024. The artist has garnered recognition from the art scene since her early career, with paintings based on her distinctive visual theories. Chung's first solo exhibition at The Page Gallery will feature 22 of the artist's latest paintings.

In Chung’s works, meticulously depicted subjects are densely filled on landscapes created by the artist. These scenes, which may appear disorderly at first glance and distorted perspective, are actually composed of countless overlapping intricately woven three-dimensional coordinates and grids. For the artist, the canvas’s surface is not simply a two-dimensional plane, but a space that can contain multidimensional time and space, and a place where consciousness becomes visible. In other words, for the artist, painting is a cutting-edge medium that can reveal multidimensional structures and the workings of consciousness. On this surface, which she calls a multidimensional plane, the artist experiments with and constructs her own visual theory.

The enigmatic paintings of Chung, where everyday objects like medicine bottles, pears, and butterflies are mixed with distorted shapes and various colors, do not convey a specific narrative or symbolic meaning. The artist explores how the basic elements of painting—color and form, which unfold on a multidimensional plane—visualize human consciousness, seeking the uniqueness and balance of visual language.

The new works featured in this exhibition are based on the artist's visual theory, which has been meticulously refined over 20 years, and they exhibit a simpler and clearer expression than before. The artist's theory revolves around the workings and principles of consciousness that occur in the process of combining colors and forms, aiming to enable new artistic thought. In Suejin Chung’s solo exhibition, viewers are invited to discover the hidden order and freedom within the puzzle-like compositions and to experience a departure from the metaphors and associations predicted by conventional notions.

Suejin Chung lives and works between Seoul and New York, graduated from the Painting Department at Hongik University in 1992. She then moved to the United States and received her Master of Fine Arts in Painting from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1995. Since 1999, she has held solo exhibitions at Project Space Sarubia, Doosan Gallery, and Mongin Art Center. She has participated in numerous exhibitions at major institutions such as the Seoul Museum of Art, Art Sonje Cente

더페이지갤러리는 정수진(b.1969, 서울)의 개인전을 8월 22일부터 9월 21일까지 개최한다. 작가는 독자적 시각이론을 바탕으로 제작한 회화로 초창기부터 국내외 미술계의 주목을 받았다. 이번 더페이지갤러리와의 첫 전시에서 작가는 신작 회화 22점을 선보인다.

정수진의 작품에는 세밀하게 표현된 대상들이 작가가 창조한 풍경 위에 높은 밀도로 채워져 있다. 일면 무질서해 보이고 원근법을 벗어난 화면은 실상 치밀하게 짜인 입체 좌표와 그리드가 무수히 중첩된 것이다. 작가에게 캔버스는 단순한 2차원의 평면이 아니라 다차원의 시공간이 담길 수 있으며 의식의 가시화가 일어나는 장소이다. 즉 작가에게 회화는 다차원의 구조와 의식의 작동 방식을 드러낼 수 있는 최첨단의 매체이다. 다차원 평면이라 명명한 이 위에서 작가는 자신만의 시각이론을 실험하고 구축한다.

약병, 서양배, 나비와 같은 일상적 사물과 일그러진 형상 그리고 다양한 색채가 뒤섞여 수수께끼 같은 정수진의 회화는 특정 내러티브나 상징적 의미를 전달하지 않는다. 정수진의 작업은 회화를 이루는 기본적인 요소인 색채와 형상이 다차원 평면 위에서 어떻게 인간의 의식을 가시화하는지에 대한 것이다. 나아가 작가는 색형 조합의 연구를 통해 시각 언어의 고유함과 균형을 찾고자 한다.

이번 전시에 출품된 신작들은 20년간에 걸쳐 견고하게 다듬어진 작가의 시각이론을 바탕으로 전보다 간결하고 명확한 표현을 띈다. 작가의 이론은 색과 형상들이 조합되는 과정에서 벌어지는 의식의 작동 방식과 법칙에 대한 것이며 이를 통해 새로운 예술적 사유를 가능하게 하기 위한 것이다. 이번 정수진의 개인전에서 작가가 그려낸 퍼즐 같은 화면 속 숨겨진 질서와 자유를 찾고, 상식적 관념으로 예측되는 은유와 연상에서 벗어나는 새로운 경험을 할 수 있기를 바란다.

서울과 뉴욕을 오가며 작업하는 정수진은 1992년 홍익대학교 미술대학 회화과를 졸업한 후 미국으로 건너가 1995년 시카고 아트 인스티튜트에서 회화과 석사 학위를 수여 받았다. 1999년부터 프로젝트 스페이스 사루비아다방, 두산 갤러리, 몽인 아트 센터 등에서 개인전을 비롯하여 서울시립미술관, 아트선재센터, 국립현대미술관, 알바니아 티라나 비엔날레, 파리 에스파스 루이비통 등 다수의 국내외 주요 기관 전시에 참여했다. 주요 작품 소장처로는 국립현대미술관, 두산 연강 재단, 한국문화예술위원회, 상하이 롱 뮤지엄이 있다.
