Other Creatures From The Garden Of Eden

The Page Gallery presents Other Creatures From The Garden Of Eden, the first solo exhibition in Korea by London-based artist Frederic Andersen (b. 1973, Luxembourg), from June 12 to July 26, 2025. Featuring 20 new works, this exhibition offers a concentrated view of the artist’s evolving practice over the past five years.

Frederic’s work always begins with drawing. For him, drawing is not just a preparatory step but a raw, intuitive process — a site of emotion and rhythm. Like music, his drawings emerge as immediate reactions, often completed within seconds or minutes. Only a few are later selected and developed into paintings through a long, considered process.

Once the drawing transitions into painting, the pace slows dramatically. Andersen aims to retain the tension and energy of the original, carefully controlling every element. Using airbrush — which keeps his hand off the canvas — he relies solely on sight and sensation to maintain balance. A single change in line thickness or density can shift the entire work, requiring intense focus — unlike the spontaneous nature of drawing.

The works are presented in three series, categorized by background color and technique. The white series is minimal and restrained. The orange works emphasize rhythm through vivid colors and scattered marks. A newly introduced “splash” series appears free but is in fact slow and deliberate. These pieces subvert his usual airbrush method — drawing is done at a distance, then carefully recreated with hundreds of oil paint touches, replicating each mark in detail. Andersen describes this as “balancing fast senses with slow craftsmanship.”

Though abstract in appearance, his works are rooted in specific emotions, memories, and rhythms. He listens to music while drawing: Freddie Hubbard for the white series; Thad Jones, Lee Morgan, and Art Farmer for the orange series; and Arvo Pärt’s Tabula Rasa for the splash series. He prefers first pressings, valuing their raw, immersive quality that sharpens his perception.

Titles hold no fixed meaning. Like the drawings, they arise from intuition — spontaneous words or phrases that have no narrative tie to the image. He often juxtaposes words or combines lingering emotional tones, leaving space for viewers’ interpretations. The exhibition title, Other Creatures From The Garden Of Eden, invites imagination beyond familiar myth, opening room for alternate lives and meanings.

This conceptual openness is vital to his work. Andersen believes the empty space in painting can be central, even essential. He relates this to the Buddhist idea of emptiness (śūnyatā) — a space where traces emerge, disappear, and transform. These quiet voids are not blank, but dynamic fields of energy. For him, “nothingness is the sum of all potential,” pointing to abstraction’s philosophical depth.

Frederic Andersen’s work is not about image but sensation — less depiction, more experience. His paintings are events, compressions of time, and traces built over time. This exhibition highlights the complexity and intensity of his visual language, offering a nuanced take on contemporary abstraction.

Educated at the University of the Arts London, Andersen began with figurative drawing, later evolving his own abstract approach. He has held solo exhibitions in New York, Madrid, and Barcelona, received the Metro Imaging Mentorshipand Made in Arts London awards, and was a finalist for the Tiffany & Co. Studiomakers Prize.

더페이지갤러리는 2025년 6월 12일부터 7월 26일까지 런던을 기반으로 활동하는 작가 프레데릭 앤더슨(룩셈부르크, b. 1973)의 한국 첫 개인전 <Other Creatures From The Garden Of Eden>을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 지난 5년간 작가의 작업 세계의 흐름을 집약적으로 보여주는 자리로, 20점의 작품이 처음 공개된다.
프레데릭의 작업은 항상 드로잉에서 시작된다. 작가에게 드로잉은 단지 준비 과정이나 밑그림이 아니라, 감정과 직관, 리듬을 가장 순수하게 담아내는 지점이자 실험의 현장이다. 그는 드로잉을 마치 음악처럼, 생각 이전의 반응으로 그려내며 빠르면 30초, 길어도 몇 분 이내에 완성한다. 그러나 그중 회화로 이어질 수 있는 것은 극소수에 불과하며, 오랜 시간을 거쳐 선별해 캔버스 작업으로 발전시킨다.

완성된 드로잉은 페인팅으로 이어지며, 이때부터 작업의 리듬은 급격히 느려진다. 그는 드로잉의 긴장과 에너지를 그대로 옮겨 담기 위해 회화 제작 과정에서도 미세한 구성을 유지하고자 노력한다. 특히 에어브러시 작업은 캔버스와 손이 직접 접촉하지 않기 때문에 선과 선 사이의 관계, 흔적들의 균형을 오롯이 눈과 감각에 의존해 조정한다. 선 하나의 굵기나 밀도가 달라지면 전체 균형이 무너질 수 있기에, 즉흥적으로 작업된 드로잉과는 반대로 극도의 집중력을 필요로 하는 과정이다.

전시에 소개되는 작품은 배경색과 제작 방식에 따라 세 시리즈로 보여진다. 각기 다른 시기, 다른 접근에서 출발했지만 모두 이러한 드로잉–페인팅 전환의 정수를 보여준다. 흰 배경을 가진 작품은 최소한의 선으로 구성된 가장 절제된 형식이고, 강렬한 주황색을 띠는 작품은 무작위적 흔적들과 다채로운 색감으로 리듬감을 전면화한다. 이번 전시를 통해 처음 공개되는, 마치 물감이 튄 것 같은 새 연작은 자유롭고 즉흥적으로 보이지만 실은 가장 느리고 정밀한 방식으로 완성된다. 에어브러시로 캔버스 표면에 손이 접촉하지 않는 기존 작업 과정을 전복시켜, 이 시리즈는 드로잉의 과정에서 종이와 손의 거리를 둔다. 이후 종이 드로잉 위에 나타난 수백 개의 점과 흔적 하나하나는 아주 미세하고 전통적인 유화 방식의 붓질로 캔버스 위에 재현된다. 작가는 이 과정을 “빠른 감각과 느린 수공의 긴장 사이에서 균형을 찾는 일”이라 표현한다.

그의 작품은 언뜻 보기엔 추상적이지만, 기저에는 구체적인 감정과 기억, 그리고 리듬이 깔려 있다. 드로잉을 할 때는 음악을 반복해 듣는데, 이번 전시에 포함되는 흰 배경의 작품은 Freddie Hubbard(프레디 허바드), 주황색 연작은 Thad Jones(테드 존스), Lee Morgan(리 모건), Art Farmer(아트 파머)의 1950년대 뉴욕 재즈 레코드에서, ‘스플래시’ 시리즈는 Arvo Pärt(아르보 패르트)의 『Tabula Rasa』에서 각각 영감을 받았다. 그는 가능한 한 최초로 발매된 ‘퍼스트 프레싱’ 음반만을 주로 듣는데, 이는 마치 연주가 눈앞에서 벌어지는 듯한 몰입을 제공해 드로잉의 감각을 더욱 예민하게 만든다.

작가는 작업의 제목에도 고정된 의미를 부여하지 않는다. 드로잉과 마찬가지로 제목 역시 즉흥적이고 감각적으로 떠오른 단어나 문장을 기반으로 형성되며, 작품 이미지와 직접적인 서사적 관계는 없다. 그는 하나의 단어를 바탕으로 연상된 또 다른 단어들을 병치하거나 감정의 잔향을 포착한 어휘들을 결합하는 방식으로 제목을 생성한다. 이러한 방식은 구체적 해석을 피하고, 오히려 관람자의 사고가 자유롭게 흐를 수 있는 개념적 여백을 마련한다. 이번 전시명 <Other Creatures From The Garden Of Eden> 또한 익숙한 신화적 서사의 주변에 존재할 또 다른 ‘생명들’을 상상하게 하며, 특정한 메시지보다 해석의 여백을 열어두는 역할을 한다.

이러한 여백은 그의 작업에서 매우 중요한 개념이다. 작가는 회화 속 여백이 단지 공간을 비워놓는 것이 아니라, 오히려 그것이 중심이자 본질일 수 있다고 말한다. 그는 이 여백의 개념을 불교의 ‘공(空)’ 사상과 연결지어 사유한다. 흔적은 여백 안에서 출현하고, 사라지며, 변화하고 소멸한다. 여백은 고요하지만, 동시에 모든 움직임이 시작되는 장이다. 작가는 이러한 여백이야말로 그림 안에서 가장 강력한 에너지를 품고 있다고 말한다. “무(無)가 곧 가능성의 총합”이라는 그의 사유는 추상 회화가 가지는 존재론적 잠재력을 다시 떠올리게 만든다.

프레데릭 앤더슨의 작업은 이미지가 아닌 감각의 회화이며, 재현보다는 경험에 가깝다. 그에게 있어 그림은 대상이 아니라 사건이며, 시간의 압축이고, 흔적의 축적이다. 이번 전시는 그가 수년간에 걸쳐 구축해온 회화적 언어의 복합성과 밀도를 압축적으로 보여주며, 동시대 추상 회화의 한 단면을 섬세하고도 강렬하게 제시한다.

프레데릭 앤더슨은 런던을 기반으로 활동하는 회화 작가다. 초기에는 구상 드로잉에 몰두했지만, 이를 해체하고 재구성하며 자신만의 추상 언어를 발전시켜왔다. 런던 예술대학교에서 석사 과정을 마쳤으며, 뉴욕, 마드리드, 바르셀로나 등에서 개인전을 열었다. 메트로 이미징 멘토십 어워드와 메이드 인 아츠 런던 어워드를 수상했고, 티파니앤코 스튜디오메이커스 프라이즈 최종 후보에 오른 바 있다.
