Surface and Depth is a group exhibition by abstract Chinese contemporary artists; to examine the rising phenomenon of Chinese contemporary art in the global art world. Peng Feng, a Beijing University professor, international art critic, and director, co-curated this exhibition. Western art has reached a dead end due to its excessive logicality, yet Chinese contemporary art tends to start everything over, the unbound potential as its driving force. The participating artists’ work introduces the new context of Chinese abstract art, its original philosophical ground, and its development distinct from the repetition or extension of Western abstraction.

≪평면과 심도≫는 국제 미술시장에서 화제가 되고 있는 ‘중국 현대미술의 주목할 현황’을 객관적으로 선보이는 중국 현대미술가의 그룹 전시이다. 본 전시는 중국 북경대학 교수이며 세계적인 미술 평론가 및 디렉터로 활동중인 펑펑(Peng Feng)이 공동 기획자로 참여하였다. 서구 미술의 지나친 논리성이 막다른 골목에 다다른 한편 중국은 현대미술의 모든 것을 완전히 새로운 방향에서 시작하려는 경향을 보이며 묘한 힘을 갖는다. 본 전시의 중국 현대미술가들의 작품은 서양 미술의 반복 또는 연장이 아닌 중국식 추상미술의 새로운 맥락, 그 고유한 사유와 생성과정의 흐름을 소개한다.
