Na Jeom Soo

"Instead of searching for meaning, it would be easier to see objects as they are in nature."
- Na Jeom Soo

Na Jeomsoo

12 September - 28 October 2018

The Page Gallery WEST

微言大意 is a two-person exhibition by Lee Kun-Yong (b. 1942) and Na Jeomsoo (b. 1969) that includes over 80 works of painting, drawing, installation, sculpture, and performance from the artists' well-known and new series.

Lee Kun-Yong is the central artist who led Korean avant-garde art since the late 1960s. He organized the group "ST (Space & Time)" and "AG (Avant-Garde)" that initiated Korean conceptual art and performance art, expanding his artistic methodology by emphasizing the aspect of physical practice and artistic process in installation, drawing, and painting.

Na Jeomsoo is a sculptor who presents his works in a designated space standing on the essence of their substantial condition - like nature, like wind, not an artificial notion - without any attached meaning. The works from his well-known series "Thinking Origined from Plants" is to be interpreted as intervention over the transformation of his materials. His unique way of handling natural mediums such as trees, rock, earth, straw, coal, etc. - which sustains their original quality throughout the whole working process - refreshes the viewers' conception of familiar objects facing them in a current moment.

Both artists execute delicate intuitive language, which presents an existential experience of their works free from prevalent prejudice deriving from fixed ideas and concepts.
