Surface and Depth is a group exhibition by abstract Chinese contemporary artists; to examine the rising phenomenon of Chinese contemporary art in the global art world. Peng Feng, a Beijing University professor, international art critic, and director, co-curated this exhibition. Western art has reached a dead end due to its excessive logicality, yet Chinese contemporary art tends to start everything over, the unbound potential as its driving force. The participating artists’ work introduces the new context of Chinese abstract art, its original philosophical ground, and its development distinct from the repetition or extension of Western abstraction.
