We delight in the playful mélange of human faces and figures, realistic animal shapes, toy- and gummy candy-like representations of animals, and oversized slices of bread that eclipse the characters in Chung Suejin’s The Last Scenery of Mind (2023). Our busy minds engage on a journey where such disparate visualizations are interconnected.
Chung (b.1969, Korea), inspired by plane surfaces, uses oil on linen canvas to create a multidimensional immersive and surreal visual experience that’s viewed as three-dimensional. The painting, showcased among a diverse group of works by Asian artists who I encountered for the first time at The Page Gallery of Seoul booth, was acquired directly from the artist’s studio. It has been exhibited once before at Lee Eugean Gallery in Seoul, and makes its blockbuster European debut in Maastricht.
