Park suk won  (b.1942) 

Park Suk Won is a leading figure in the history of Korean contemporary sculpture.  His Accumulation series is an examination of the potentiality of an oeuvre, hence seeking harmony between men and nature. Throughout the Accumulation series from the 1980s, employing the method of “abstract-cutting” and “accumulation,” he has prominently worked with nature-based materials such as stones and wood.

In pursuit of an unorthodox approach to his work, Park Suk Won has kept his distance from handed-down techniques. His methodology built a new flow of Korean abstract sculpture. In the absence of any representational image, he immerses himself in a simplified and abstract form of a sculpture, leading to the question of the existence of men. 

The core concepts of “accumulation” and “repetition” also expand in Park Suk Won’s two-dimensional works. Embracing the tendency of natural resources or materials, he aggregates the Korean traditional paper, “Hanji,” vertically and horizontally on a canvas. Through the practice of repetition and re-assembly, he once again underlines the value of the pure properties of materials while expanding his philosophy to two-dimensional paintings.

박석원은 한국 현대조각사를 대표하는 작가이다. ‘한국아방가르드협회(AG)’와 ‘에꼴 드 서울(Ecole de Seoul)’ 전시에 참여해 한국 화단의 새로운 조형질서를 모색했다.  

1980년대 전후로 시작된 ‘적의 (積:쌓을 적 意: 뜻 의)’시리즈는 돌이나 스테인리스, 나무를 기하학적으로 절단하고 다시 쌓아 올리는 ‘축적’의 행위가 조각 전면에 나타난다. 전통 조각의 관습에서 벗어나 ‘절단’과 ‘축적’이라는 자신만의 고유한 방법으로 재료 그 자체의 물성을 강조하는 새로운 한국 추상조각의 흐름을 구축했다. 단순한 형태를 띄는 그의 조각은 재현적 요소를 차단하여 재료 본연의 물성과 구조를 강조하고 자연과 인간의 관계, 더 나아가 실존의 문제에 도달한다.  한국의 돌탑이 지닌 조형적인 특성을 현대 추상조각으로 연결 지어 한국적인 추상조각의 방향을 모색한 그의 의지는 한지라는 소재를 통해 발전한다. 축적과 반복의 개념은 기하학적으로 절단된 한지를 수평 수직으로 중첩시킨 평면으로 확장되며 구체적인 형상을 나타내기 위한 매개체가 아닌 한지 자체의 물성을 강조한다. 이는 재료를 절단하고 재조립함으로써 본연의 물성을 드러내는 조각적 태도의 연장선이며, 조각가로서 물질을 입체적으로 바라보고 그것을 분화하는 본능이 평면작업으로 확장되었음을 알 수 있다.
