Annie Morris

Annie Morris (b. 1978, London) is a British artist primarily working in sculpture, tapestry, and drawing. She is best known for her signature Stack series, as well as her Flower Woman sculptures, which are based on her drawings, and her tactile tapestry works.

The Stack series features spheres of various colors and irregular sizes, all of which are intricately balanced and stacked vertically. The series, which started from the artist’s personal experience in dealing with the pain of stillbirth, features precariously stacked spheres symbolizing a pregnant woman’s belly, representing both the miracle of life and the anxiety that comes with it. The contrasting vivid colors and rhythmic arrangement fill the space with a warm yet powerful energy. The Wall Street Journal described this series as “Stacks of Joy.”

Reminiscent of Matisse’s colorful drawings, Morris’s Flower Woman series highlights her exceptional drawing skills through sculptures that beautifully and simply depict the female body with graceful lines. The steel sculptures, with flower-shaped heads and bodies symbolizing pregnant women, also serve as self-portraits of the artist.

Annie Morris is an artist who works across both two-dimensional and three-dimensional mediums. Her automatism drawing extends into her tapestry series through textile techniques. The stitching on linen emphasizes a painterly texture that resembles pastels or charcoal, a method referred to as “Thread Painting.”

From 1997 to 2001, Annie Morris studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts under the guidance of Giuseppe Pennone, one of Italy’s leading sculptors. In 2003, she graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art in London. She has held exhibitions at notable venues such as the Fosun Foundation Shanghai, Château La Coste in France, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in the UK, and the Amore Pacific Museum of Art in Korea, gaining significant recognition along the way.

Annie Morris’s works are currently housed in prestigious collections worldwide, including the Foundation Louis Vuitton, the Tish Collection in New York, the University of Colorado Art Museum, the Amore Pacific Museum of Art, the Long Museum in Shanghai, the Fosun Foundation, and the Pérez Art Museum Miami.

마치 마티스의 컬러풀한 드로잉을 연상하게 하는 애니 모리스의 꽃 여인(Flower Woman) 시리즈는 작가의 뛰어난 드로잉 실력을 증명하듯 여성 신체를 유려한 선으로 간결하고 아름답게 그려낸 조각 작품이다. 꽃 형태의 머리와 임신한 여성을 상징하는 신체를 가진 강철 조각은 작가 자신의 초상화이기도 하다.

애니 모리스는 평면과 입체를 넘나들며 다양한 작품활동을 하는 작가로, 그의 자동기술법적 드로잉은 직물 기술을 통해 태피스트리 시리즈로 확장된다. 린넨 위의 바느질은 마치 파스텔이나 목탄으로 그린 것 같은 회화적 질감을 강조하며, 이는 실 페인팅(Thread Painting)이라고 불린다.

애니 모리스는 1997년부터 2001년까지 파리 에콜 데 보자르 (École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts)에서 이탈리아의 대표 조각가 중 하나인 주세페 페노네 (Giuseppe Pennone)의 지도를 받고, 2003년에는 런던의 슬레이드 미술학교를 졸업했다. 상하이 포선 재단, 프랑스 샤또 라 코스테, 영국 요크셔 조각 공원, 서울 아모레퍼시픽 미술관 등 에서 전시를 개최하여 주목받은 바 있다.

애니 모리스의 작품은 현재 루이비통 재단, 뉴욕 티쉬 컬렉션, 콜로라도 대학 미술관, 아모레퍼시픽 미술관, 상하이 롱 미술관, 포선 재단, 마이애미 페레즈 미술관 등 세계 유수의 컬렉션에 소장되어 있다.
