YEESOOKYUNG

Yeesookyung, who majored in Western Painting at Seoul National University, is a contemporary artist who shows a unique artistic spectrum through a variety of mediums, ranging from installation to drawing, video, and performance.

Her representative work, <Translated Vase> series, is based on the motif of broken ceramic fragments. Reborn as a new type of ceramic by attaching pieces of ceramic picked up from a potter's kiln with 24-carat gold leaf, the work implies the recombination of tradition and modernity, re-illumination of abandoned things, and healing of wounds. The broken porcelain fragments lost their original meaning, but were reinterpreted in a modern way by the artist's hands and gained a new artistic life.

Yeesookyung, who received national and international attention with this series at the 2006 Gwangju Biennale, has since toured museums and art fairs around the world to enthrall overseas collectors as follows: UK Liverpool Biennial (2008), MIMOCA (2009), SFMOMA (2011), MMCA in Seoul (2012), Art Basel Hong Kong (2014), Venice Biennale (2017), MADRE and Museo di Capodimonte (2019) in Naples. Most recently, at Maison Valentino's brand reinterpretation project exhibition in Beijing, China, three pieces of Yeesookyung's <Translated Vase> were presented along with an evening dress by Valentino Haute Couture SS21 Code Temporal. Yee is actively participating in the contemporary movement that captures new perspectives.

Yeesookyung's works are in the collections of renowned art museums in Korea and overseas, such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) in Gwacheon, Museum of Fine Arts Boston in the US, British Museum in the UK, Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte in Italy, and the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan.

서울대학교에서 서양화를 전공한 이수경은 설치미술부터 드로잉, 영상, 퍼포먼스 등 다양한 매체를 통해 독특한 예술적 스펙트럼을 보여주는 현대 미술가이다.

그녀의 대표작인 <번역된 도자기> 시리즈는 깨진 도자기 파편을 모티브로 한 작품이다. 도공의 가마에서 주워 온 도자기 파편을 순금으로 이어 새로운 형태의 도자기로 재탄생한 이 작품은 전통과 현대의 재조합, 버려진 것들에 대한 재조명, 상처에 대한 치유 등의 의미로 평가된다. 깨진 도자기 파편은 본래의 의미를 상실하였지만 작가의 손에 의해 현대적인 변형으로 재해석되어 예술적 생명력을 얻게 된다.

2006년 광주 비엔날레에서 이 연작으로 국내외 주목을 받은 이수경은 이후 영국 리버풀 비엔날레 (2008), 마루가메 현대미술관 (2009), 샌프란시스코 미술관 (2011), 서울 국립현대미술관 (2012), 홍콩 아트바젤 (2014), 베니스 비엔날레 (2017), 나폴리 도나레지나 현대미술관 및 카포디몬테 미술관 (2019) 등 전 세계 미술관 및 아트페어를 돌며 해외 컬렉터들을 열광시키고 있다. 가장 최근에는 중국 베이징에서 메종 발렌티노의 브랜드 재해석 프로젝트 전시에서 작가의 <번역된 도자기> 3점이 발렌티노 2021년 코트 템포럴 오트 쿠튀르 컬렉션 이브닝드레스와 함께 소개되었다. 이처럼 새로운 시선을 담은 동시대적 행보에 적극 동참하고 있는 이수경의 작품은 과천 국립현대미술관, 미국 보스턴 미술관, 영국박물관, 이탈리아 국립 카포디몬테 박물관, 일본 후쿠오카 아시아 박물관 등 국내외 유명 미술관에 소장되어 있다.
