JUNG MYUNG TAEK Korean, b. 1971

Jung Myung Taek imprinted the notion of Art Furniture formed in the United States in the 1950s on the Korean public. He connects culture with another and combines tradition and novelty to create an Art Furniture containing naturalistic aesthetic and Korean authenticity. Jung produced several furniture as a designer and producer of Wendell Castle Collection, so called the father of art furniture, while studying in the United States. After returning home, he was inspired by the open and ever-changing space of ancient Korean architecture and began to create works with a naturalistic spirit in earnest. Jung, in a broader sense, views the spirit inherent in ancient architecture as “the pure beauty of nothingness,” “the plain beauty of heartlessness,” and “the spatial beauty of intangibility,” and reinterprets it with a modern sensibility. As a result, Jung’s work satisfies the emotion of the person who communicates beyond practicality and physical sense.

The artist has been freely exploring the essential relationship between material and space beyond visual art and practical functions through his work as of now. Regardless of whether in the East or the West, Jung’s philosophical thinking about Art Furniture was recognized at home and abroad. The artist was selected as the next-generation design leader by the Minsitry of Knowledge Economy and the Korea Design Promotion Agency in 2009, and has been participating in major group exhibitions at home and abroad, including the Milan Triennale Design Museum in 2018, Design Art Busan in 2017, and Design. Miami Basel in 2010. Currently working in Seoul, he teaches students at Yeungnam University’s School of Design and Art.

정명택은 1950년대 미국에서 형성된 아트 퍼니처 (Art Furniture)의 개념을 한국 대중에게 각인시켰다. 그는 문화와 문화를 연결하고 전통과 새로움을 조합하여 자연주의 미의식과 한국의 정도 (正道)가 담긴 아트 퍼니처를 창작한다. 정명택은 미국 유학 당시 아트 퍼니처의 아버지라 불리는 웬델 캐슬의 컬렉션 Wendell Castle Collection의 디자이너 및 제작자로 여러 가지 가구를 제작했다. 귀국 후 작가는 한국 고건축의 개방적이고 변화무쌍한 공간에서 많은 영감을 받아 자연주의 정신이 내재된 작품을 본격적으로 만들기 시작했다. 정명택은 고건축에 내재되어 있는 정신을 크게 '무위(無爲)의 순수미'', '무심(無心)의 담백미', '무형(無形)의 공간미'로 바라보고, 이를 현대적 감성으로 재해석한다. 그 결과 정명택의 작품은 실용성과 신체적 감각을 넘어 교감하는 이의 정서를 충족시킨다.

작가는 현재까지 작품을 통해 시각적 아름다움과 실용적 기능을 넘어 물질과 공간의 본질적 관계에 대해 자유로이 탐구하고 있다. 동서고금을 막론한 정명택의 아트퍼니처에 대한 철학적 사유는 국내외에서 인정받았다. 작가는 2009년에는 지식경제부와 한국디자인진흥원이 선정하는 차세대 디자인 리더로 선정되었고, 2018년 밀라노 트리엔날레 디자인 뮤지엄, 2017년 디자인 아트부산, 2010년 디자인 마이애미 바젤 등 국내외 굵직한 그룹전에 꾸준히 참가하고 있다. 현재 서울에서 활동하는 그는 영남대학교 디자인미술대학에서 학생들을 가르치고 있다.
