Yanghee Lee: Axis and Foot

Yanghee Lee: Axis and Foot

22 MARCH - 25 MAY 2024

Tracking down the etymology of the dance is intriguing. The movements of tension, extension, support, and continuity are made to "remove the gap," "shake off the wrong," and "focus the mind" through effort and concentration. It seems self-evident that lurking beneath this web of meaning lies a message of the desire for life.

These specific movements of Yanghee Lee are deeply connected to her experience in dancing since childhood. While studying Korean traditional and modern Korean dance, he brings out both elements of the dances in her performance. The smile on her face before thinking, the flexible fingertips, and the footsteps that remain calm despite their multiple functions embody a sense of aesthetics within themselves. However, as she invested more of her time dancing the familiar dance she practiced, she became more conscious of her physicality, trapped in familiar movements, ultimately questioning the justification of the fundamental movements.

By expanding her boundaries as a traditional Korean dancer, Yanghee Lee invested in studying the source of the movements she learned, the essential movements in Korean traditional dance, forms, and breath. The works showcased at the exhibition result from studies of a primal form and universal manifestation of dance.

The four videos presented in this exhibition are centered on the principle embodied in the dancing body that Yanghee Lee focuses on, removing the spectacle of dance. The "axis and foot" of the dance is conveyed by the rotating body, the rising and falling body, the rhythm-conscious body, and the body that repeats the training. This shows the direction that Yanghee Lee takes from Korean traditional dance, going beyond the traditional frame.

As a choreographer who shares her artistic expressions via performance, Yanghee Lee creates a temporary theatre or presents her work as an exhibition. Her recent works are executed in videos and performances associated with a physical body, pleasure, and form - the main components of dance. Lee studied traditional Korean dance at Ewha Womans University and earned a master's in dance education at New York University. Lee is now a founder of Yanghee Lee Choreographic and works as a collaboration artist at Theatre C and The Syndicate, both located in New York. Lee was a resident artist at New York Live Arts (2011-2012) and Movement Research (2014-2016) and was granted a fellowship program at the Asian Cultural Council (2016).

April 24, 2024
