Nathan Coley : All Possible Worlds

대형 텍스트 조명 작업으로 알려진 네이단 콜리는 공공의 장소와 언어를 결합하며 공간이 함유하고 있는 의미를 상호관계적으로 탐구하는 작가이다. 콜리는 이번 전시 《모든 가능한 세계 (All Possible Worlds)》 에서 ‘엘도라도 (El Dorado)’의 이상적 풍경을 파노라마처럼 펼쳐 보이며, 관람자를 전설적인 유토피아의 세계로 초대한다. 작가는 다의적이고 함축적인 문구와 구절을 대항해 시대를 대표하는 엘도라도의 풍경과 결합하며 현실과 이상 그리고 공간과 인간의 관계에 대한 열린 사유의 장을 제시한다.

라이프니츠(G. W. Leibniz)가 표현한 ‘가능한 모든 세계 중 최상의 세계 (The best of all possible worlds)’는 당대 유토피안 철학자들이 꿈꾸던 세계를 대변해 준다. 작가는 라틴아메리카 지역 어딘가에 존재했었다고 전해진 황금의 도시 엘도라도를 가장 이상적인 공간으로 제시한다. 엘도라도 라이트 박스 시리즈는 19세기 ‘주버 앤드 시에(Zuber & Cie)’에서 제작한 엘도라도의 풍경을 담은 월페이퍼를 사용했다. 당시 유럽인들이 당도하고자 했던 가장 이상적인 세계를 완벽하게 묘사한 파노라믹 월페이퍼는 프랑스의 장인들이 국가 문화유산으로 지정된 원본 목판으로 200가지 이상의 색상을 사용하여 수작업으로 완성된다. 라이트 박스 시리즈를 둘러싸며 전시장의 벽면을 따라 이어지는 무채색의 시적인 풍경은 작가가 AI기술로 재구성한 엘도라도의 풍경이다.

엘도라도의 목가적 풍경이 전시장을 은은히 감돌며 서정적으로 펼쳐지는 가운데, 대항해 시대의 노스탤지어를 불러일으키는 라이트 박스들이 차례로 그 존재를 드러낸다. 그 사이로 선명한 빛을 머금은 시적 문장들이 관람객을 에워싸며, 이상과 현실이 맞닿는 또 하나의 시적인 풍경으로 관람객을 초대한다.

Known for his large, illuminated text works, Nathan Coley brings together public spaces and language, exploring the meanings embedded in spaces through their interrelationships. At this exhibition, All Possible Worlds, he unfolds the idealized landscape of “Eldorado” in a panoramic format, inviting viewers into the legendary realm of utopia. The artist pairs layered, implicative phrases with landscapes of El Dorado, which many consider symbolic of the Age of Discovery, creating an open field for contemplating the relationship between reality and ideals, and between spaces and humans.

Noted German philosopher and mathematician  G. W. Leibniz’s idea of “the best of all possible worlds” represents the kind of world envisioned by the utopian philosophers of his time. Coley presents Eldorado—the fabled city of gold said to have existed somewhere in Latin America—as such an ideal place. The Eldorado lightbox series incorporates panoramic wallpapers depicting Eldorado, as produced by Zuber & Cie in the 19th century. These wallpapers, which perfectly visualized the ideal world longed for by Europeans at the time, were created by French artisans using original woodblocks (later designated as national cultural heritage) and hand-printed with over 200 colors. Surrounding the lightbox series, a continuous band of achromatic, poetic landscape imagery extends along the gallery walls. This represents Eldorado landscapes that have been reconfigured by the artist using AI technologies.

As the idyllic scenes of Eldorado gently fill the gallery space, the lightboxes emerge one by one, evoking a nostalgia for the Age of Discovery. At the same time, poetic sentences illuminated with crisp, glowing light envelop viewers, inviting them into another ethereal  landscape where ideals and reality come into contact.
