Overview

On September 13, 2022, the Teatro del Silenzio (Theater of Silence), an open-air performance venue in the small Italian town of Lajatico, was lit up with a captivating red light. In this event, where Ferrari introduced the first SUV in its 75-year history, the huge 11-meter-tall sculpture that made the historical moment of Ferrari even brighter was <Colonna Infinita> (2022) by Park Eun Sun, a representative artist of The Page Gallery.

Park Eun Sun is a sculptor who captures the breath of nature in geometric abstraction. He left for Italy in 1993 to study at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara and is active on the international stage while working in Pietrasanta, Italy, famous for its marble.

His work is largely composed of “cracks'' and “fractures.” The horizontal and vertical architectural rhythm and structure are naturally formed by splitting two pieces of marble of different colors into thin plates and stacking them alternately. Through the tension between the roughly destroyed stones and the elaborately surfaced stones and the perfect formative composition between them, the message of art and human nature come to coexist in a work that embodies the natural beauty, the artificial, and scientific rigor.

Park Eun Sun was the first Korean artist who held a solo exhibition at Pisa International Airport in Italy in 2015, which lasted for two years. In the same year, he was invited to the historical sites of Forte di Bard and Villa Ghirlanda Silva to imprint his name in Italy as a sculptor. He was also invited to Bad RagARTz (2015), held every three years in Switzerland, standing shoulder to shoulder with world-class sculptors. He has participated in more than 50 solo exhibitions and more than 200 group exhibitions in various parts of Europe. In recognition of his achievements in promoting the excellence of Korean art to the world, Park was awarded the Order of the National Merit by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2015. He was also awarded honorary citizenship of Pietrasanta in 2021, becoming one of 19 artists and only the third foreigner to have received the city's honorary citizenship in the past 100 years.

Currently, construction of his museum is underway in Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, designed by the world-renowned Swiss architect Mario Botta (1943- ).

2022년 9월 13일, 이탈리아의 작은 마을 라자티코의 야외 공연장 델 실렌치오(침묵의 극장)가 매혹적인 레드 라이트로 물들며 들썩였다. 페라리가 75년 역사상 최초의 SUV를 소개하는 이 자리에서 페라리의 역사적인 순간을 더욱 빛나게 해준 11m 높이의 거대한 조각 작품은 바로 더페이지 갤러리의 대표 작가 박은선의 <무한기둥> (2022)이다.

박은선은 기하학적 추상 속에 자연의 숨결을 담아내는 조각가이다. 그는 1993년 이탈리아로 유학을 떠나 카라라 국립 예술원에서 수학한 후, 대리석으로 유명한 이탈리아 피에트라산타에서 작업하면서 국제 무대에서 활발한 활동을 하고 있다.

작가의 작업은 “균열”과 “깨짐”으로 이루어진다. 색이 다른 두 개의 대리석을 얇은 두께의 판으로 쪼개 번갈아 쌓아 올리는 과정을 통해 수평과 수직의 건축적 리듬과 구조 자연스럽게 형상한다. 거칠게 파괴된 돌과 정교하게 표면이 처리된 돌 사이의 긴장, 그리고 이들 사이의 완벽한 조형적 구성을 통해 예술과 인간 본질에 대한 메시지가 자연스러운 아름다움과 인공적인 것, 과학적인 엄격함이 구현된 작품 안에 공존하게 된다.

박은선은 2015년도에 이탈리아 피사 국제공항에서 한국인 최초로 개인전을 2년간 열었고, 같은 해 포르테 바르드요새 박물관, 빌라 기를란다 실바 유적지 등에 초대되며 이탈리아에서 조각가 박은선을 각인시켰다. 또한 3년마다 개최되는 스위스 바드라가르츠 트리엔날레에 초청되어 세계적은 조각가들과 어깨를 나란히 했다. 유럽 각지에서 50회의 개인전 및 200여 회 이상의 그룹전에 참가한 그는 한국 미술의 우수성을 세계에 알린 업적을 인정받아 2015년 국민 훈장을 외교부로부터 수여받았다. 나아가 박은선은 2021년도에 피에트라산타시의 명예 시민증을 받으며 지난 100년간 명예 시민증을 받은 예술가 총 19명 중 한 명으로 이름을 올렸고, 외국인으로서는 역대 세 번째이다.

현재 전라남도 신안군에 스위스 출신의 세계적인 건축가 마리오 보타(1943-)의 설계로 그의 미술관이 준비 중에 있다.
