SADIE LASKA American, b. 1974
Based in New York, Sadie Laska depicts end-of-the-century landscapes with images gathered from media such as news, magazines, and movies. The artist was born in West Virginia and was exposed to MTV music videos and pop music growing up. He grew up in Brooklyn in the late 1990s, immersed in the punk, rock, and hardcore culture that took place in underground venues and warehouses. Since 2007, he has been the drummer of the band I.U.D., which has performed at the Museum of Modern Art's PS1. In 2010, he studied painting at Bard College, where he creates works that combine hardcore music and painting.
In her flag series, Laska employs a format which is inherently politicized and merges it with stylized elements taken from previous works. Collage, has always played a central role in Laska’s body of work; informing the ways in which she finds, forms, and layers imagery across her various media. In past series, Laska has layered ad clippings from vintage women’s magazine, photos of mannequin heads, pieces of fabric, and recognizable stars from an American flag with gestural swaths of paint. These cut elements bring with them not only their fraught meanings –the commodification of women’s reproductive health, the sanctity of the flag, etc. –but also serve as visual references that re-appear in her current work. Collage is the framework for all of Laska's work.
