According to the Chinese legend of ‘The Nine Sons of a Chinese Dragon (龍生九子)’, the dragon had nine sons. But they were not dragons; instead, each had the appearance of a different beast. Although these nine mutant dragons could not become dragons, they lived among humans and shared the joys and sorrows with them, acting according to their respective appearance and character.

Like the nine dragons in the Chinese legend, mutation or hybridity is a major feature of Yeesookyung’s art. The pieces of ceramics carelessly discarded by potters are no longer pottery, but Yeesookyung collects the fragments and attaches them piece by piece with gold to awaken the strong vitality hidden in the frailty of fate.

This exhibition was organized to shed light on Yeesookyung’s multifarious art, encompassing three-dimensional, two-dimensional and digital works. We invite the audience to a mysterious and strange land created by the artist, who continues to transform and expand toward a new dimension of creativity.

중국의 전설 용생구자(龍生九子)에 의하면 용에게는 아홉 아들이 있었는데 이들의 형상은 용이 아닌 제각기 다른 짐승의 모습을 하고 있었다. 이 돌연변이 아홉 용은 비록 용은 될 수 없었지만, 각자의 모습과 성격에 맞게 활약하며 인간들의 삶 속에서 함께 했다.

용생구자 속의 아홉 용처럼 돌연변이 혹은 혼종성은 이수경 예술세계의 주된 특징이다. 도공에 의해 처참히 버려진 도자 조각들은 더 이상 도자기는 아니지만, 작가는 그 파편들을 금으로 이어 붙여 숙명적인 연약함 속에 감춰진 강인한 생명력을 일깨운다.

입체, 평면 그리고 디지털 작업을 아우르는 이수경의 다채로운 작품 세계를 조명하기 위해 기획된 이번 전시는 새로운 차원의 창작 영역으로 변주와 확장을 거듭하고 있는 이수경이 만들어 낸 신비하고도 이상한 나라로 관객들을 초대한다.
