Jinn Bronwen Lee Korean, b. 1984

이진 (Jinn Bronwen Lee)은 베를린을 기반으로 서울과 시카고를 오가며 활동하는 화가이다. 작가는 자신의 회화에 인간 존재의 근본적인 혼돈과 일탈을 수용하며 균형을 찾아가는 과정을 담고자 한다. 작가는 사무엘 베케트를 인용하며 회화는 인간의 실존적인 과정이 수용되고 발효되며 천천히 연소하는 과정을 담는 화로와 같은 것이라고 말한다. 이에 따라 회화는 시간이 지남에 따라 물리적, 화학적, 공간적 변화를 거쳐 새롭게 해석될 수 있다. 이진의 회화는 비정형의 타원 또는 아치형의 캔버스에 어두운 색과 질감으로 가득 차있다. 작가가 선택하는 캔버스의 형태와 스케일은 신체의 각 부분의 조건이 창이나 문과 같은 건축의 구조에 따라 경험하게 되는 일상적인 신체 경험을 바탕으로 한다. 머리 속에 개념으로만 존재하던 어떤 생각이 너른 마당에 하나씩 토대를 쌓고 기둥과 지붕을 쌓아 올리는 집 짓기의 과정처럼 작가는 그림을 그리는 과정도 이미지로만 존재하던 어떤 생각이 캔버스 위에 구체화되어 현실에 실재하게 되는 과정으로 여긴다. 따라서 그림을 그리는 행위는 비가시적인 생각과 아이디어를 드러내 보여주는 일종의 광학적 트랜지스터(Optical Transistor)와 같은 역할을 한다. 완성된 작품이 아니라 혼란과 수용의 과정을 보여주는 이진의 회화는 새로운 시각적 경험으로 열어주는 창과 같은 역할을 하며 관람객을 새로운 미지의 영역으로 이끈다.

이진은 시카고의 로건 센터 포 더 아트(Logan Center for the Arts), 베를린의 막스 헤츨러와 살롱 달만(Salon Dahlmann), 아메리칸 아카데미 로마 등 주요 갤러리와 박물관에서 전시를 한 바 있다.

Jinn Bronwen Lee is a Berlin based painter, also working between Seoul and Chicago.She aims to capture the fundamental ‘mess’(=life) of human existence in her paintings. Her work illustrates a process of finding balance. Quoting Samuel Beckett, she describes painting as akin to a brazier in which the existential processes of humanity are absorbed, fermented, and slowly combusted. Consequently, interpretations of her work undergo continual renewal, as her paintings experience physical, chemical, and spatial changes over time.

Jinn Bronwen Lee’s paintings are characterized by dark colors and textures on non-rectangular, often oval or arched, canvases. The form and scale of the canvases she selects are based on everyday bodily experiences dictated by architectural structures like windows or doors. Just as a conceptual thought takes shape and becomes tangible in the process of building a house, laying a foundation and erecting pillars and roofs in an open yard, Lee sees the process of painting as a way to concretize abstract thoughts on canvas, making them a reality. Thus, the act of painting functions like an optical transistor, revealing invisible thoughts and ideas. Lee's paintings, which show the process of mess and acceptance rather than a finished product, act as windows opening on new visual experiences, leading viewers into unfamiliar territories.

Jinn Bronwen Lee has exhibited at major galleries and museums including the Logan Center for the Arts in Chicago, Max Hetzler and Salon Dahlmann in Berlin, and the American Academy in Rome.
